Originally, French doors were not doors at all. They were initially manufactured as large windows instead. These windows, however, were made so that they could be opened and provide access to a balcony. The French began introducing glass to more parts of their architecture during the Renaissance. This applied to doors also. Over time, these large opening windows have become simply known as French doors. Nowadays, many people also call them loft french doors. Particular emphasis was put on light. With more light available, homes could actually stay well lit for a longer time compared to the situation prior to adding these large windows. In some cases, French doors were added to corridors and other interior spaces. From now on, light could reach the areas of the home that it was never able to get to before. Originally, French doors were made of wrought iron and wood, but over time, with the addition of glass and other materials, they became more elaborate. Their popularity grew, and by the end of the 17th century they began to appear outside France, in countries such as England and the Netherlands.
