How to make Loft steel doors? Basic information .
Of course, loft doors can be made on their own. For this you will need some basic tools such as:
- welder;
- a saw for steel;
- files for steel of different gradations and shapes;
- a flat steel table - preferably a welding table;
- grinder;
- drill;
- screwdriver;
- clamps.
The above-mentioned tools are mostly found in any workshop or a small production.
What kind of steel to choose?
There are many standards for the manufacture of loft doors on the market. The most classic and elegant solution is the production from closed steel profiles and cold-rolled angles and flat bars available in most DIY stores. Production from such materials allows any technological solution of muntins and achieving the same appearance of the door on both sides. There are no production limitations. Doors made of such material look noble and strong - this is how production has been carried out throughout Europe for many years.
Loft door production - how to get started?
If you do not feel confident in welding, then we rather advise against self-manufacturing, because contrary to appearances it is not as easy as it may seem. Doors are made of thin profiles and angles, which deform very easily during welding, and as a result, it turns out that "welding a few frames" takes a huge amount of time and the result is not at all satisfactory.
Start with the design of the loft door
To begin with, it is good to know what kind of door you want to produce, how many wings you want it to have, and determine the divisions of the stiles. This will give us an idea of the amount of materials needed for the door ( frame, muntins, etc.)
An additional advantage of the project is the ability to start individual lengths and cut them on the saw, so only to assemble them like blocks. What to pay attention to during the production of loft doors? If you have already started production and want to continue it there are a couple of important aspects to pay attention to:
1.Right angles in glass doors
The basic thing is right angles. In order for loft doors to look aesthetically pleasing and simply nice it is essential to keep all angles straight. Such a statement may seem trivial, but anyone who has already made such a door knows perfectly well that it is not so obvious. Right angles in the door will also allow the glass to be properly seated at the installation stage.
2. Proper distances.
Pay attention to the distances between: individual frames; the frame and the frame; the glass and the muntins; All these distances are crucial to make the manufactured door both aesthetically pleasing and functional. In addition, we advise you to take into account during production the thickness of the paint so that there will be no unpleasant surprise resulting from such a good fit of the elements "on contact" that after painting they can not be fitted together.
3.Grinding of steel
In order to make the final result pleasing to the eye, the final finishing is very important - a nice grinding of the joined parts. Both customers and door makers are advised to pay attention that the elements are sanded accurately so that no welding marks are visible, but also so that there are no grinding pits resulting from too long and uneven grinding. The quality of welding can be seen mainly in the contact areas, for example, on the stiles. In the photo below you can see the quality of workmanship that we, as a manufacturer of loft doors, offer our customers.
Construction (welded) muntins not glued in ( muntins glued to the glass). If you have the option, make sure that the construction muntins are unscrewed and not glued to the glass. If the glass is broken, it can be replaced very easily without scraping off the old glue, during which it is very easy to damage the painting of the door. Loft doors - safety glass. If you are considering glass for the door, we recommend installing laminated, reinforced or tempered safety glass. If there is a breakage, users will not hurt themselves. Such glass is available from any glazier on request.
4.Welding of loft doors Welding loft doors is not as simple as it may seem. The individual profiles sometimes have a thin wall, which makes it easy to "chase" them during welding. Make sure not to use too high a current, fit the parts well and after welding aesthetically sand the whole. Above we presented basic information on the production of loft doors.
We wish good luck to all those who decide on individual production, and all those who would like to commission such production to us are welcome to contact info@portamet.com
